Board Places Bond on Nov. 3 Ballot

Last night, the School Board unanimously voted to place a proposed $400 million school construction bond on November 3, 2026, ballot. 

The unanimous vote reflects the Board's confidence in the district's long-range facilities planning and its commitment to providing safe, modern learning environ

ments for today's students and future generations. 

If approved by voters, the bond would be invested in schools across our district by: 

• Improving student safety and security 
• Replacing and modernizing aging schools 
• Replacing portable classrooms with permanent classrooms 
• Expanding Career and Technical Education (CTE) learning spaces 
• Upgrading critical building systems and technology infrastructure 
• Improving playgrounds, fields, courts, and other outdoor learning spaces
  

More than half of our schools are over 40 years old, and some were originally built in the 1950s. As buildings age, they require more frequent repairs and many no longer fully support the way students learn today. If approved, the proposed bond would help create safer, more reliable, and more engaging learning environments while addressing needs at every school in the district. 

Funding these projects requires a partnership between the state and local community. Washington State does not fund local school construction. Instead, school districts rely on voter-approved local bonds to build and modernize schools. Once a bond is approved, districts can qualify for additional state school construction assistance, helping stretch local tax dollars further. 

Many of you may remember that a majority of voters supported the same bond proposal last February. Although it received more "yes" than "no" votes, it did not meet Washington's 60% voter approval requirement to pass. The November election gives our community another opportunity to decide on these investments in our schools.

Explore project displays, visit information stations, talk one on one with district staff, and get your questions answered. Open houses will be held Oct. 8 at Explorer Middle School, Oct. 15 at Mariner High School, and Oct. 22 at Kamiak High School.
